Poppy Playtime: Chapter 3 – Deep Sleep

Crash Landing

The chapter starts with the CatNap Recall tape before the gameplay begins. After the Train crash, The Player wakes up and is thrown down into a trash compactor by a cat-like experiment named CatNap. After escaping, The Player makes their way through a series of maintenance tunnels and rooms, before hearing a telephone ringing in the distance during the process of escaping.

The Player discovers a ringing telephone.

Finding and answering the phone, The Player finds themselves communicating with an unknown character who claims his name is Ollie. Through this newfound phone, still working despite being unused for a decade, Ollie promises to guide The Player while explaining the ongoing situation. He then tells The Player to head to Playcare, the home of CatNap. The Player returns to the Train crash site and proceeds to enter The Dome through Elliot's Express, where they hear a speech by Elliot Ludwig that introduces his ideology and thoughts during the creation of Playcare.

The Player enters Playcare.

Upon arriving at Playcare, Ollie gives The Player a key to the Gas Production Zone, which is where a gas is produced named "The Red Smoke". They soon obtain an enhanced version of the GrabPack named the GrabPack 2.0, which lets The Player jump high via Purple Hand-powered Jump Pads. Although they activate the console and briefly divert the Red Smoke, the power cuts out. Ollie tasks The Player to reactivate the power and use backup generators from all of Playcare's locations to power the Gas Production Zone and ultimately reach The Prototype. Ollie directs them to enter Home Sweet Home first, the abandoned residence for all of the orphan children.

Welcome Home

After entering Home Sweet Home, The Player inhales the Red Smoke, falling into a nightmare. They make their way through a maze of seemingly endless corridors, some even crossing over themselves, while also coming across audio recordings of Playtime Co. News Coverage, claiming that a dead child had been found on Elliot Ludwig's estate. Throughout it all, CatNap stalks The Player, watching them from the shadows and disappearing when spotted. At last, The Player reaches the end of the corridors, where they watch a Welcome To Playtime VHS tape, welcoming employees to the Playtime Co. factory. The tape then becomes more and more disturbing, beginning to call out The Player specifically for returning and telling them of the "incomprehensible horrors" that now inhabit the factory.

The Player sees Nightmare Huggy Wuggy crawling out of the television.

The Player is forced to look at the screen until a distorted and a nightmarish version of Huggy Wuggy crawls out of the television. The Player in a futile attempt, tries to run away, but is soon caught and "eaten". They then wake up in the real Home Sweet Home, discovering a Gas Mask soon after to help them navigate through areas filled with Red Smoke.

Poppy explains the situation to The Player.

The Player navigates through Home Sweet Home to find batteries, while uncovering disturbing messages and blood-stained bedsheets. They eventually manage to power its generator and leave, but as they do so, Kissy Missy attacks and pins down The Player until she is stopped by Poppy. A determined yet regretful Poppy explains to The Player she cannot just let them leave and needs to get rid of the ones who tormented them, warning them that the Prototype will kill The Player if they try to escape and that he needs to be destroyed.

Today's Lesson: Survival

With escape no longer being an option, Ollie tells The Player that Poppy has explained everything to them now, then tells them to go to the School to restore power to it. While trying to locate and turn on the generator there, The Player encounters Miss Delight, the only remaining teacher of the School, who ate her sisters due to insatiable hunger. Miss Delight continuously warns and threatens The Player, trying to get them to leave while speaking through the School's PA system, but they ignore her warnings.

The Player kills Miss Delight.

After they turn the generator back on, she damages it by smashing it with her weapon Barb before chasing The Player through various corridors and classrooms, only moving when they look away. As The Player nears the School's maintenance exit, Miss Delight abandons her movement rule and charges at The Player, who brings a gate down which instantly crushes and kills her.

The Player obtains the Flare Hand and makes their way into the caverns of Playcare. There, after completing several puzzles, they see CatNap worshipping a shrine for The Prototype. CatNap does not notice The Player and vanishes after they look away. The Player then enters the Playhouse through the caves, where they're met with a horde of Ruined Critters who they fend off via the Flare Hand.

The Player encounters DogDay.

On their way out, they discover a cell where they encounter a locked-up, tortured and legless DogDay, who explains that the entirety of Playcare is CatNap's personal territory. DogDay also explains that CatNap takes orders from The Prototype, worshipping him and killing anyone who goes against him. Shortly before his monologue ends, the Ruined Critters infest DogDay before hijacking his body and chasing The Player with it. The Player escapes the possessed DogDay, vaguely hearing his screams before taking a slide out of the Playhouse.

Need Counseling

Ollie then sends The Player to the Counselor's Office as their final objective, where they search for the generator. The Player briefly returns to the caverns, solving puzzles as they make their way through the area.

The Player in their nightmare.

As they enter a Red Smoke-filled area while trying to power the building, The Player is ambushed by CatNap, who knocks the Gas Mask off their face, making them inhale the gas once more and sending them into a dream state in which Poppy asks The Player rhetorical questions as The Players sees various visions of shadow children in Playcare. The Player eventually comes to a vision in which they see Huggy Wuggy standing motionless in the distance and hear Poppy saying "No, you don't", as a response to her previous question regarding The Player knowing or not knowing what's real. Then, The Player finds themselves surrounded by the sounds of people screaming in the Lobby during the toys' massacre. The Prototype's hand reaches out towards The Player as they helplessly stand completely still.

Then they wake up, with CatNap warning them to leave Playcare over Ollie's telephone. After re-routing the Counselor's Office backup power to the statue, Ollie gives The Player the final battery required to power the Gas Production Zone. They return to the zone, but CatNap ambushes them, filling the room with Red Smoke and chasing The Player into an elevator.

A Safe Room...?

The Player enters a Safe Room where they are required to fend off CatNap for three minutes. However, the room is filled with Red Smoke, which causes them to consistently hallucinate fake CatNaps. As he makes his way toward The Player, A Green GrabPack Hand receiver eventually overcharges and The Player utilizes this to eliminate CatNap, destroying the Green hand in the process.

CatNap gets burned alive.

CatNap is electrocuted and lit on fire after exhaling the Red Smoke. The Prototype's arm emerges from the ceiling and CatNap seemingly offers himself to his leader, just before The Prototype stabs him through the mouth, taking his life. The Prototype then takes CatNap's lifeless corpse away.

Returning to the Gas Production Zone, The Player uses the battery to power the console, eventually diverting the gas and powering the area. The Player reunites with Poppy, who shows them a tape containing CCTV footage of what happened to the company's staff and the reason why they came back, an incident the toys call "The Hour of Joy".

The tape shows the toys, under the Prototype's orders and influence, indiscriminately attacking and killing everyone present in the factory at the time. Following the incident, Playtime Co. has made the difficult decision to permanently shut down, and Elliot Ludwig's hopes and dreams were forever tainted. Poppy then explains that she heard everything that happened and has since been distraught by the needless slaughter of so many lives, including those who were innocent, on that day. Therefore, she has vowed to put an end to The Prototype for what he has done.

Poppy and The Player take an elevator deeper into the factory, while Kissy Missy stays behind to activate it. As the elevator lowers into the ground, however, Kissy is attacked by an unknown entity, and Poppy and The Player turn the elevator up to save her. But the door concealing the elevator closes, stranding them in the deeper levels of the factory and leaving Kissy's fate uncertain - at least for now...
